Local author, award-winning poet, longtime Maryland Arts Council poet-in-the schools and friend-of-The-Ivy Laura Shovan will offer Gilman’s 4th graders a virtual poetry lesson. Laura’s debut middle grade novel, The Last Stop of Emerson Elementary, was an NCTE 2017 Notable Verse Novel and won a Cybils Award for poetry.  Her other books include Takedown, a Junior Library Guild and PJ Our Way selection, and A Place at the Table, which she co-wrote with Saadia Faruqi and is a 2021 Sydney Taylor Notable.

A 4th grade teacher says of Laura, “Her love of poetry shines through every lesson. She is truly a master and introduces the students to such a wonderful variety of poems…I am always thrilled to see the poems that the children create under her tutelage.”
